Mariachi suit with jacket, pants, belt, and tie, c. 1980


Mariachi band members wear suits inspired by charros. These Mexican horsemen sported short jackets, and embroidered belt, wide bow tie, pants, boots, and a sombrero.
Antonio Ochoa wore this suit. When asked if there was a sombrero, he said his group wore them for four or five years but quit because, “They were too heavy!”

Mariachi bands feature violins, guitars, guitarrons (large bass guitars), vihuelas (small 5-stringed guitars), trumpets, cornets (small brass instruments), and sometimes accordions. Mariachi de Idaho added maracas to keep the tempo together.

We remember and honor Antonio Ochoa Jr., who lived a full life as a loving husband and father, as well as a teacher, a mentor, a musician, a businessman, and a caring community member.
Antonio loved music, especially Mariachi. He bought his own cornet and learned to play at a young age continuing through high school. When he joined the army, he played in the 76a Army Band. Antonio came to Idaho in the early 1970s and saw a need for Spanish music in church, so he formed the first Mariachi group in Idaho. Mariachi de Idaho played through southern Idaho for over 25 years.


Recordamos y honramos a Antonio Ochoa Jr., que vivió una vida plena como esposo y padre cariñoso, así como maestro, mentor, músico, hombre de negocios y un miembro de la comunidad involucrado.
A Antonio le encantaba la música, especialmente la de mariachi. Compró su propia corneta y aprendió a tocar a una edad temprana, continuando durante la escuela secundaria. Cuando se unió al ejército, tocó en la 76a Banda del Ejército. Antonio llegó a Idaho a principios de la década de los 70, vio una necesidad de música en español en la iglesia, por lo que formó el primer grupo de mariachi en el estado. Mariachi de Idaho tocó en todo el sur de Idaho durante más de 25 años.
